Can Team Building help alleviate work-related stress?

As an agency specializing in team building and musical icebreakers, we frequently contemplate the role that stress plays in our daily professional lives.

Consequently, we reflect on the true purpose of our training and recreational activities within work environments that are becoming increasingly fast-paced and demanding.

We are seeing a growing demand for team-building activities designed to alleviate stress, whether to help navigate periods of organizational change or simply to provide a breather from the intense, high-pressure schedules of corporate conventions.

The modern workplace is defined by its rapid pace: targets are constantly being raised, deadlines are tightening, and available human resources are often limited.

This takes a significant toll on workplace well-being and, by extension, on overall performance.

The million-dollar question is: why don’t we allow ourselves to slow down, perhaps by creating spaces where we can share deeper emotions with our colleagues?

Is it truly worth living without paying attention to the simpler things that allow us to appreciate the beauty of life?

While stress can be cyclical, it must be managed; it cannot be allowed to become a constant companion: a shadow that follows us wherever we go.

In this endless race to fulfill obligations and complete tasks, it is important to reflect on how stress influences our perception, acting as a distorting filter that clouds our ability to appreciate the present moment.

We become so immersed in our problems and worries that we grow blind to the small joys that appear along our daily path.

A colorful sunset, the morning song of birds, or a colleague’s smile, these things become trivial when we are overwhelmed by the tensions and demands of life.

Furthermore, stress pushes us toward a future-oriented mindset, where we are constantly focused on what needs to be done rather than on what is happening right now.

This attitude prevents us from slowing down and paying attention to the details of the present.

Finally, stress leads us to adopt a distorted perspective on life, making us believe that happiness is something to be attained in the distant future, rather than a feeling to be cultivated here and now.

This relentless pursuit of an elusive goal distances us from ourselves and from the simple joys that can only be experienced in the present moment.

Here is an anecdote I share in almost every team-building session to highlight the importance of silence in music. I have always found this social experiment truly remarkable.

It happened in Washington, D.C., in a subway station, on a cold January morning in 2007.

A man with a violin played six pieces by Bach for about 45 minutes. During that time, approximately 2,000 people passed through the station, most of them on their way to work.

About four minutes in, the violinist received his first dollar. A woman tossed some money into his hat and, without stopping, kept walking.

Six minutes later, a young man leaned against the wall to listen, then checked his watch and continued on his way.

Ten minutes in, a three-year-old child stopped, but his mother hurried him along. The child paused to look at the violinist again, but his mother nudged him forward, and he kept walking—turning his head to look back the entire time.

Almost every child who passed by reacted the same way, as did their parents, who pulled them along.

Only six people stopped to listen for a few minutes. About twenty others left a contribution but continued walking at their usual pace. The man collected a total of 32 dollars.

The violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the world’s greatest musicians. He played one of the most complex pieces ever written, on a violin worth 3.5 million dollars.

Two days earlier, Joshua Bell had played to a sold-out crowd in a Boston theater, where tickets cost an average of 100 dollars each to sit and hear him perform that same music.

Now, if we cannot take a moment to stop and listen to one of the world’s best musicians playing some of the finest music ever written, on one of the finest instruments ever crafted, what else might we have missed throughout our lives?

Can the financial reward we earn from our work, whether large or small, truly be weighed against the beauty of savoring the present moment?

This is the noblest purpose of a team building activity, an endeavor too often marketed solely as a metaphor for boosting team productivity and efficiency.

A team building activity should not merely serve to relieve stress; otherwise, it is nothing more than a stopgap measure, a way to fill a void.

Instead, it should create a space where people can shed their masks and connect on a deeper level.

Most of us spend more time with our colleagues than with our own families, how is it possible that we know each other so little?

It all comes back to the same thing: the relentless pace and the tasks that must be completed. But is it really worth it?

In my view, a visionary entrepreneur or team leader today must make room to slow down, to carve out spaces for well-being where people can enjoy the small things in life that contribute to happiness.

This should be done for its own sake, not just as a means to achieve better results.
